An Evening with Minister Blair Lekstrom – June 20, 2012

WEST VANCOUVER, BC – As an active member in the regional business community, SPF Precut Lumber’s Mo Amir was honoured to be invited to an intimate dinner and roundtable discussion forum with BC Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Blair Lekstrom, as hosted by Member of the Legislative Assembly for North Vancouver-Seymour, Jane Thornthwaite. Limited to only ten seats, the five-star dinner and roundtable was hosted at the historic Capilano Golf & Country Club in West Vancouver, British Columbia. High-profile attendees included Jim Belsheim (President, Neptune Bulk Terminals), Brad Eshleman (President, Western Stevedoring), Jon Somers (Vice President, Canpotex), and Tony Gugliotta (Senior Vice President, Vancouver Airport Authority).

With a candid openness to the issues, the Honourable Minister Lekstrom discussed a wide variety of concerns from the attendees including infrastructure projects to support easier port access for international trade, public transportation and roads development, labour market concerns, social issues such as health and education, and the province’s economic outlook for the next five years. The small roundtable dinner format made for a particularly inclusive discussion, as SPF Precut Lumber was proud to represent the lumber industry and commerce in British Columbia on this very prestigious evening.

Simon Fraser University: Guest Lecture – June 8, 2012

BURNABY, BC – As a proud alumnus of Simon Fraser University’s Business Administration program, Mo Amir of SPF Precut Lumber was extremely delighted to return to his alma mater to guest-lecture for an Organizational Theory class (BUS 374) taught by his former colleague, Dr. Kirsten Robertson. The lecture was attended by over 100 third-year business administration students. In addition, Mo was honoured to host a very special guest: Member of the Legislative Assembly for North Vancouver-Seymour, BC Liberal Jane Thornthwaite, who drew a very warm welcome from the students.

While using SPF Precut Lumber as a case study, Mo Amir lectured on business strategy to manage the uncertainty in the external business environment. In summary, Mo overviewed how in order to hedge the risks of the external environment to achieve sustainably profitable business operations, business strategy must employ the following tactics: a) product and service differentiation that creates a competitive advantage within an industry; b) high reputational and relational standing to build stakeholder trust; and c) supply chain and market plurality so as to hedge external environment risks through diversification. The presentation was extremely well-received, as the students had very informed questions for a discussion afterwards. As a proud Bachelor of Business Administration graduate from Simon Fraser University, Mo Amir is extremely thrilled for the opportunity to lend his experience and the international business experience of SPF Precut Lumber to the bright-minded business people of the future.
